Presidential Ion-Drive Delta Boat
The flashy ion-drive delta speedboat piloted by Zaphod Beeblebrox across the seas of Damogran. Supported on a hazy cushion of ionized atoms, yet fitted with retractable water-slashing finblades purely for dramatic effect.
Item Specification: Presidential Ion-Drive Delta Boat
"The crowd gasped, dazzled by sun and seamanship, as the Presidential speedboat zipped round the headland into the bay. It flashed and shone as it came skating over the sea in wide skidding turns.
In fact it didn't need to touch the water at all, because it was supported on a hazy cushion of ionized atoms — but just for effect it was fitted with thin finblades which could be lowered into the water. They slashed sheets of water hissing into the air, carved deep gashes in the sea which swayed crazily and sank back foaming in the boat's wake as it careered across the bay.
Zaphod loved effect: it was what he was best at."— The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chapter 4
The Presidential Ion-Drive Delta Boat is a high-speed aquatic craft used by Galactic President Zaphod Beeblebrox on the oceanic world of Damogran to travel between the tiny spaceport on Easter Island and the Heart of Gold research complex on the crescent-shaped island of France.
Propulsion & Showmanship Systems
Engineered to reflect the core mandate of the Galactic Presidency—attracting maximum attention through spectacle—the delta boat combines effortless physics with unnecessary theatrics:
- Ionized-Atom Cushion: The hull is supported entirely on a hazy cushion of ionized atoms and does not actually need to touch the water at all.
- Theatrical Finblades: Purely for effect, the craft is outfitted with thin retractable finblades that can be lowered into the sea at high speed to shoot wild walls of water at the sun, slash hissing sheets of spray into the air, and carve deep foaming gashes across the bay.
- Three-Arm Ergonomics: The cockpit allows Zaphod to spread his two primary arms lazily along the seat back while steering the wheel sharply with his recently fitted third arm beneath his right one.
The Red-Leather Sofa Bubble Lift
Upon slewing to a halt beneath the steep inner cliffs of the island of France, the speedboat pairs with an equally flamboyant cliff-ascension system:
- The Twenty-Foot Transparent Globe: A twenty-foot-high transparent bubble floats beside the boat, bobbing and glistening on the waves.
- Gyro-Stabilized Red Leather Sofa: Inside the sphere floats a wide, semi-circular sofa upholstered in glorious red leather—engineered so that the more the outer globe bobs and rolls, the more the sofa stays perfectly still ("steady as an upholstered rock").
- The Boiling Water Spout: Once the passenger steps through the wall of the globe and puts his feet up on the sofa, the sea boils and spouts beneath the bubble, surging it hundreds of feet up the cliff face on a towering jet of water before tipping it onto a railed ramp where it riddles to a halt on a concave platform.
Zamphuor
A fragrant, faintly luminescent celestial powder scraped from crystallised nebular spores. Step Seven of the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, sprinkled as a pinch to temper the thermonuclear reaction.
Large Yellow Bulldozer
A big yellow caterpillar-tracked earthmover dispatched by the local council to demolish Arthur Dent's house. Operates in conjunction with unionized drivers and stands as the terrestrial precursor to the Vogon Constructor Fleet.
