Antarean Parakeet

A vividly feathered alien bird native to the crimson jungles of Antares IV, ruthlessly hunted by black-market poachers for its skewered glandular cocktail delicacies.

Creature Profile: The Antarean Parakeet

Antarean Parakeet

"Ford's copy of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy smashed into another section of the control console with the combined result that the guide started to explain to anyone who cared to listen about the best ways of smuggling Antarean parakeet glands out of Antares (an Antarean parakeet gland stuck on a small stick is a revolting but much-sought-after cocktail delicacy and very large sums of money are often paid for them by very rich idiots who want to impress other very rich idiots)..."

— The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chapter 17

The Antarean Parakeet is a vibrantly plumed, gregarious avian native exclusively to the ruby cloud-forests of Antares IV in the Antares system. Characterized by iridescent feathering that shifts between emerald and copper under the glare of the red supergiant, the parakeet would normally enjoy the status of a protected ecotourist marvel—were it not for an anatomical quirk of its endocrine system.

The Glandular Phenomenon

Deep within the bird's throat cavity lies a small, specialized endocrine gland designed to process volatile nitrogen compounds from native berries. When harvested and skewered onto a tiny stick, this organ becomes the notorious Antarean Parakeet Gland:

  • The Gastronomic Paradox: By all objective standards of taste and culinary decency, the raw gland is widely recognized as completely revolting.
  • The Veblen Good: Despite—or perhaps because of—its pungent, rubbery unpalatability, possession of the skewered gland is considered the ultimate status symbol among high-society galactic oligarchs. Trillions of Altairian dollars circulate annually through illicit smuggling rings purely so very rich idiots can ostentatiously nibble them to impress other very rich idiots.

Black-Market Smuggling Operations

Due to strict Imperial customs embargos around Antares IV, extracting parakeets or their harvested organs requires complex evasion maneuvers:

  1. Cryo-Stasis Satchels: Concealing dormant birds inside lead-lined thermal pods disguised as diplomatic correspondence.
  2. Sub-Meson De-Ionization: Neutralizing the organ's distinctive chemical odor to fool customs sniffer-drones.
  3. The Guide's Guide to Smuggling: As Ford Prefect's copy blurted out when dropped on the bridge of the Heart of Gold, the Guide maintains a comprehensive, continuously updated chapter on the optimal bribery schedules for Antarean customs inspectors.
