The Outer Eastern Rim
The vast, windswept border frontier lying on the eastern fringe of the Galactic disc. Famous for soggy marsh worlds, wild mattress habitats, and hyperspatial navigational hazards.
Sector Dossier: The Outer Eastern Rim
"The Galaxy is a large, unruly, and frequently bewildering place, but nowhere does it feel quite so ragged around the edges as along the Outer Eastern Rim, where the stars thin out into the cold intergalactic void and the local inhabitants are largely unbothered by anything more urgent than whether today is a good day to dry out in the swamp."
— The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Travel Almanac
The Outer Eastern Rim marks the eastern trailing perimeter of the galactic wheel. Facing directly out into the fathomless intergalactic void that separates our Galaxy from the terrifying emptiness beyond, it is an immense, sparsely populated frontier of lonely suns, drifting nebular clouds, and fiercely independent colonies.
Regional Character & Demographics
Unlike the stifling bureaucratic corridors of the Galactic Core or the unfashionable cul-de-sacs of the Western Spiral Arm, the Eastern Rim is characterized by vast interstellar distances, relaxed attitudes toward imperial jurisdiction, and a total absence of municipal parking tickets:
- Frontier Autonomy: Because imperial tax collection frigates take upwards of six months to navigate the perimeter (and routinely get diverted by unexpected hyper-space anomalies), worlds in the Eastern Rim largely govern themselves via customary toasts, informal bartering, and polite agreements to avoid discussing galactic politics.
- Atmospheric Solitude: Communities here tend to be quiet, philosophical, and deeply suspicious of individuals wearing crisp suits or carrying leather briefcases.
- Sub-Etha Reception: Navigational beacons and Sub-Etha relay transmissions are notoriously sporadic, prone to severe atmospheric flaring from uncharted blue giants.
Notable Systems & Worlds
The Squornshellous System
The undisputed geographic wonder of the Eastern Rim:
- Primary World: Squornshellous Zeta — a misty, swampy world made almost entirely of gentle reed beds, tepid marshes, and soft fragrant mosses.
- Indigenous Inhabitants: Home to the galaxy's only known wild population of live, intelligent mattresses, every single one of whom is called Zem. They spend their peaceful lives flolloping, vooing, and basking in the damp breeze before undergoing voluntary kiln-drying for export to premier luxury hotels.
Navigational Hazards & Astrogation Advisory
Hitchhikers and independent freight captains navigating the Outer Eastern Rim are advised to heed the following precautions:
- Intergalactic Void Vertigo: When looking eastward out of your cockpit canopy, there are no stars at all—only the endless, chilling black abyss of outer nothingness. Prolonged gazing into the rim void is known to induce severe existential dread; keep your towel draped over the viewport if symptoms arise.
- Refueling Infrastructure: Commercial fuel depots are sparse. Never attempt a hyperspace jump through the rim unless your reaction mass is verified at minimum seventy percent capacity.
- Swamp Courtesy: When landing on Squornshellous Zeta or neighboring marsh atolls, never jump up and down on native mattresses without first introducing yourself and asking polite permission.
The Megabrantis Cluster
The political hub of the Galaxy and headquarters of the Galactic Civil Service. Within a few short Vog years of discovering interstellar travel, every last Vogon migrated from Vogsphere to the Megabrantis Cluster.
The Western Spiral Arm
Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun and an utterly insignificant blue-green planet.
