Sector Dossier: The Western Spiral Arm

"Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun.

Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-two million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea."

— The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Introduction

The Western Spiral Arm is widely considered by cosmopolitan galactic society to be the galactic equivalent of a neglected cul-de-sac behind a disused municipal recycling plant. Stretching millions of light-years across the trailing edge of the Milky Way, it is sparse, dusty, and thoroughly lacking in fashionable cocktail lounges.

The "Unfashionable" Stigma

According to Megadodo Publications travel surveys, ninety-eight percent of citizens residing in the Galactic Core or the sun-drenched resort sectors of Ursa Minor Beta have never set foot in the Western Arm. The reasons cited include:

  1. Dreadful Radio Reception: Sub-Etha broadcasts routinely suffer phase-distortions, causing radio dramas to arrive backwards and thirty years late.
  2. Pedestrian Technology: Worlds in this sector frequently exhibit bizarre fixations on combustion engines, paper paperwork, and wrist-worn timekeeping devices.
  3. Absence of Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters: Most local establishments serve only bitter lukewarm infusions of dried leaves in boiling water.

Notable Sub-Sectors & Systems

Sector ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha (The Sol System)

Perhaps the most notorious sub-sector within the arm, primarily because it was scheduled for summary vaporization by the Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz of the Vogon Constructor Fleet to make way for the new Hyperspatial Express Route 42.

  • Primary World: Sol III (Earth) — cataloged by the Guide as "Mostly harmless".
  • Local Astrogation Warning: Approaching starships are advised that local planetary planning notices have been posted in the Alpha Centauri regional office for the past fifty Earth years.

Counterpart Across the Galaxy: Damogran (Opposite Spiral Arm)

Far away on the opposite spiral arm of the Galaxy—five hundred thousand light-years from Sol—lies the hot, remote oceanic world of Damogran, where the Imperial Galactic Government secretly constructed the Heart of Gold before it was stolen by Galactic President Zaphod Beeblebrox.

Hitchhiker Navigation Advisory

Interstellar hitchhikers wandering through the Western Arm should note:

  • Commercial freight lines pass through infrequently; waving an Electronic Thumb on an empty asteroid belt may take several weeks to yield a ride.
  • Towels should be kept dry and rolled tightly under the arm.
  • In the event of encountering a Vogon construction cruiser, hitchhikers are strongly advised under no circumstances to listen to any recited poetry.
