Item Specification: Standard EVA Space Suit

Standard EVA Space Suit

"For some reason, if a strag discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc."

— The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chapter 3

The Standard EVA Vacuum Space Suit represents the zenith of personal survival engineering in the void of space. Fabricated from twelve alternating plies of aluminized Mylar, Nomex thermal insulation, and micrometeorite-resistant Kevlar weave, it provides up to eight hours of autonomous life support in hard vacuum, lethal radiation zones, or sub-zero planetary nights.

Vacuum Survival & The Airlock Dilemma

While every hitchhiker dreams of owning their own custom-tailored space suit, very few actually do due to cost, weight, and bulk:

  • The Thirty-Second Rule: If ejected from an airlock into the cold void without a suit—such as when thrown out of a Vogon ship by Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz—a humanoid biped has approximately thirty seconds of consciousness before asphyxiation and lung trauma take hold.
  • The Probability of Rescue: According to the Guide, the chances of being picked up by a passing ship within those thirty seconds are precisely $2^{276,709}$ to 1 against (a number that also happened to be the telephone number of an Islington flat where Arthur Dent once attended a party).
  • The Strag Assumption's Crowning Glory: The notion that a casual hitchhiker carrying nothing more than a shoulder satchel and a Massively Useful Towel is secretly carrying a fourteen-kilogram pressurized space suit is the crowning absurdity of the Strag Towel Assumption. Yet strags believe it without question, and will readily offer you a spare suit if you casually mention you left yours in the overhead compartment of a starship you just jumped off.
