Poetry Appreciation Chair

"The prisoners sat in Poetry Appreciation chairs — strapped in. Vogons suffered no illusions as to the regard their works were generally held in. Their early attempts at composition had been part of a bludgeoning insistence that they be accepted as a properly evolved and cultured race, but now the only thing that kept them going was sheer bloodymindedness.

The sweat stood out on Ford Prefect's brow, and slid round the electrodes strapped to his temples. These were attached to a battery of electronic equipment — imagery intensifiers, rhythmic modulators, alliterative residulators and simile dumpers — all designed to heighten the experience of the poem and make sure that not a single nuance of the poet's thought was lost."

— The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chapter 7

The Poetry Appreciation Chair is a specialized interrogation and literary-enforcement restraint apparatus installed on the bridge of a Vogon Constructor Ship. Because Vogons suffer no illusions as to the regard in which their poetry is generally held—composing it initially out of a bludgeoning insistence that they be accepted as a properly evolved and cultured race, and continuing now out of sheer bloodymindedness—captive audiences must be physically strapped down before a recital begins.

Electronic Enhancement Battery

To ensure that prisoners cannot mentally tune out a Vogon captain's recitation, each chair features heavy physical straps and cranial electrodes strapped to the prisoner's temples, wired directly into a four-stage battery of electronic equipment designed to heighten the experience of the poem and ensure that not a single nuance of the poet's thought is lost:

  1. Imagery Intensifiers: Amplify every fetid visual metaphor directly into the listener's visual cortex.
  2. Rhythmic Modulators: Drive the poem's meter into the victim's skull as physical lumps of thumping pain.
  3. Alliterative Residulators: Prolong the acoustic decay of consonant clusters ("plurdled gabbleblotchits", "bindlewurdles", "blurglecruncheon").
  4. Simile Dumpers: Deliver the final line's electronic enhancement full blast across the temples—causing Ford Prefect to wrench his head back in spasms and go limp, while Arthur Dent lolled and rolled in his seat before barefacing their way out with an improvised literary critique.
