Infinite Improbability Drive

"The Infinite Improbability Drive is a wonderful new method of crossing vast interstellar distances in a mere nothingth of a second, without all that tedious mucking about in hyperspace.
It was discovered by a lucky chance, and then developed into a governable form of propulsion by the Galactic Government's research team on Damogran."

— The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chapter 10

The Infinite Improbability Drive (housed within a small gold box at the unseen heart of the Starship Heart of Gold) is a revolutionary propulsion system that crosses the mind-paralysing distances between the furthest stars in a mere nothingth of a second, completely eliminating all that tedious mucking about in hyperspace.

History of Discovery: From Virtual Impossibility to Finite Improbability

For years, respectable physicists understood how to generate small amounts of finite improbability by hooking the logic circuits of a Bambleweeny 57 Sub-Meson Brain to an atomic vector plotter suspended in a strong Brownian Motion producer (such as a nice hot cup of tea), but encountered perpetual failure when trying to construct a machine capable of generating an infinite improbability field. In the end, they grumpily announced that such a machine was virtually impossible.

The breakthrough came by lucky chance when a student who had been left to sweep up the lab after a particularly unsuccessful party reasoned as follows:

  1. The Logical Deduction: If such a machine is a virtual impossibility, then it must logically be a finite improbability.
  2. The Tea-Powered Materialization: Therefore, all he had to do in order to make one was to work out exactly how improbable it was, feed that figure into the finite improbability generator, give it a fresh cup of really hot tea, and turn it on.
  3. The Golden Generator & The Lynching: Doing so, the student was rather startled to discover that he had created the long-sought-after golden Infinite Improbability Generator out of thin air—and even more startled when, just after being awarded the Galactic Institute's Prize for Extreme Cleverness, he was lynched by a rampaging mob of respectable physicists who had finally realized that the one thing they really couldn't stand was a smartass.

Development on Damogran

Following the student's discovery, the Galactic Government's top-secret research team on Damogran—comprising humanoid engineers, reptiloid atomineers, green sylph-like maximegalaticians, octopodic physucturalists, and a Hooloovoo—developed the golden generator into a governable form of propulsion at the heart of the 150-metre-long Heart of Gold, before the ship was stolen at its unveiling ceremony by President Zaphod Beeblebrox and Trillian.

Emergency Unprogrammed Activation (The Magrathean Missile Crisis)

Under standard operating procedures, engaging the drive requires meticulous programming of target improbability levels into the navigational computers. However, during the crisis in orbit above Magrathea (Chapter 17):

  • The Crisis: With the ship's guidance computer (Eddie) jammed by ancient Magrathean ECM, the manual flight lever snapped off in panic, the ship pinned upside down against the ceiling, and two Magrathean Guided Missiles bearing down with five seconds to impact, the crew faced certain death.
  • The Unprogrammed Gamble: Arthur Dent reasoned that activating the drive unprogrammed could hardly produce an outcome worse than impending nuclear vaporisation. Despite Zaphod Beeblebrox's terror that without programming "anything could happen," Trillian authorized the move.
  • Activation: Arthur scrambled up the moulded contours where the wall met the ceiling and slapped the emergency drive switch, triggering a mind-mangling explosion of noise and light across all dimensions of reality.

Proofing Screens & Transmutation Physics (Chapter 18)

In standard operation, the Infinite Improbability Drive operates behind energized proofing screens designed to isolate the hull and surrounding spacetime from quantum distortion.

  • The Unshielded Burst: Because Arthur activated the drive in an emergency without first engaging the proofing screens, the raw, unfiltered improbability wave washed through the ship and outward into the local orbital volume.
  • Macroscopic Transmutation: At an improbability factor of $8,767,128$ to 1 against, the energy field reorganized matter at the atomic level:
    • The interior bridge bulkheads reconfigured into an airy garden conservatory with pastel green and blue decor, ferns, a spiral staircase, and touch-materializing marble consoles.
    • The two incoming thermonuclear missiles were instantaneously transfigured into a sperm whale and a bowl of petunias, neutralizing the lethal threat entirely.
