Stellar Dossier: Orion Beta (Rigel)

"...an old drinking game that Ford had learned to play in the hyperspace ports that served the madranite mining belts in the star system of Orion Beta. The game was not unlike the Earth game called Indian Wrestling..."

— The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chapter 1

Orion Beta (known historically to terrestrial astronomers as Rigel) is a scorching, ferociously luminous B-type blue-white supergiant dominating the southern perimeter of the Orion complex in the Western Spiral Arm.

Burning with the incandescent intensity of one hundred and twenty thousand standard suns, Orion Beta's ultra-violet output is so severe that visiting spacecraft must engage double-layer magnetic deflector shrouds simply to prevent their sensor radomes from melting into slag.

Stellar Architecture & The Primordial Disc

Unlike older, quieter systems such as Sol, Orion Beta is comparatively young, violent, and dynamic:

  • Radiation Pressure: The star's ferocious stellar winds continuously blow planetary atmospheres back into deep space, leaving most inner orbital bodies stripped down to barren, airless mineral cores.
  • The Shattered Ring System: Rather than orderly terrestrial worlds, the system is famous for its sprawling, debris-clogged orbital belts—the remnants of a proto-planetary collision that pulverized three rocky worlds into billions of crystalline asteroid fragments.
  • The Mandranite Seams: Deep within these shattered planetoid belts lie the galaxy's richest known concentrations of Mandranite, an exotic crystalline mineral essential for heavy hyperspatial shielding and sub-etha relay harmonic converters.

The Orion Beta Frontier Culture

Because Orion Beta lies beyond the immediate jurisdiction of the Galactic Core's regulatory boards, the mining operations here have spawned a rugged, anarchic boomtown atmosphere:

  1. The Free-Ports: Dozens of hollowed-out nickel-iron asteroids function as lawless trading outposts, gambling dens, and repair docks for independent prospectors.
  2. Telepathic Wagers: The local saloons are notorious across the sector for extreme zero-gravity dice games and high-stakes telepathic drinking bouts fueled by unrefined Arcturan spirits.
  3. The Hitchhiker's Peril: Flagging down a lift through the Orion Beta belts is remarkably easy, though travelers should be warned that eighty percent of local pilots are either half-deaf from pneumatic rock drills or currently evading Megadodo tax enforcement cutters.
