Stellar Dossier: Vogsol

"He was the way he was because billions of years ago when the Vogons had first crawled out of the sluggish primeval seas of Vogsphere, and had lain panting and heaving on the planet's virgin shores . . . when the first rays of the bright young Vogsol sun had shone across them that morning, it was as if the forces of evolution had simply given up on them there and then, had turned aside in disgust and written them off as an ugly and unfortunate mistake."

— The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chapter 5

Vogsol is the primary star of the Vogsphere system, ancestral homeworld of the Vogons. Today a sullen, middle-aged star illuminating an abandoned world of sluggish seas and broken crab shells, Vogsol occupies a unique place in galactic evolutionary history as the light source that revealed nature's greatest anatomical blunder.

The Primeval Morning on Vogsphere

Billions of years ago, when Vogsol was still a bright young sun:

  1. The Evolutionary Repudiation: As the first primitive Vogons crawled out of the sluggish primeval seas of Vogsphere and lay panting and heaving on the planet's virgin shores, the first morning rays of the bright young Vogsol sun shone across their dark-green rubbery hides, small piggy foreheads, and highly domed noses. Taking one clear look at them in the sunlight, the forces of evolution gave up on them there and then, turned aside in disgust, and wrote them off as an ugly and unfortunate mistake.
  2. Stubborn Survival: Never evolving again under Vogsol's rays, the Vogons survived solely through thick-willed, slug-brained stubbornness ("Evolution? they said to themselves, Who needs it?"), doing without whatever nature refused to grant them until they developed the surgical technology to rectify their grosser anatomical inconveniences.
  3. Nature's Overcompensation: Under the same Vogsol sun, the natural forces of Vogsphere worked overtime to make up for their earlier blunder—bringing forth scintillating jewelled scuttling crabs, tall aspiring trees of breathtaking slenderness and colour, and elegant gazelle-like creatures with silken coats and dewy eyes, all of which the Vogons systematically smashed, burnt, or sat on until they discovered interstellar travel and migrated en masse to the Megabrantis Cluster.
