Point of Interest Dossier: The Marshes of Fallia

"Allow four litres of Fallian marsh gas to bubble through it, in memory of all those happy Hikers who have died of pleasure in the Marshes of Fallia."

— The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chapter 2

Covering more than four hundred thousand square miles of the southern temperate lowlands on planet Fallia, The Marshes of Fallia are widely considered by cosmic travelers to be the most alluring, fragrant, and delightfully hazardous wetlands in the known universe.

Landscape & Ecological Dynamics

The marshes consist of an endless expanse of warm, shallow peat pools, vibrant violet reed beds, and soft mats of emerald moss that float gently upon subterranean geothermal currents:

  • The Gas Calderas: Millions of submerged geothermal vents continuously generate large, slow-rising bubbles of Fallian Marsh Gas. As these bubbles breach the surface, they pop with a soft musical plop, releasing clouds of sweet, aromatic vapor that drift across the reeds like perfumed fog.
  • The Warm Geothermal Mire: The water temperature remains a constant, bath-like 32 degrees Celsius year-round, tempting exhausted travelers to strip off their hiking boots, roll up their trousers, and wade out into the calm shallows.

The Fatal Ecstasy of the Marshes

In galactic medical journals, the Marshes of Fallia hold a unique record: they are the only geographic region in the Galaxy where mortality rates are driven entirely by unmitigated bliss:

  1. The Stages of Infection: Within ten minutes of breathing the unshielded vapors, a visitor experiences total psychological tranquility. Within twenty minutes, all memories of unpaid taxes, broken hyperdrives, and Vogon planning notices evaporate.
  2. The "Happy Peril": Visitors frequently lie down in the warm, scented moss beds, drape a towel over their eyes, and smile so intensely that they simply decline to stand back up, eventually expiring with expressions of beatific ecstasy.
  3. The Towel Lifeline: Experienced field researchers visiting the marshes always tie a sturdy tether around their waist and anchor it to an orbital landing skiff before venturing into the reeds, ensuring their companions can haul them back out before sensory overload sets in.
