Disaster Area Concert Grounds (The Vitrified Basin)
A colossal crater of polished volcanic green glass left behind after Disaster Area's orbital sound system detonated the desert sands into smooth obsidian.
Point of Interest Dossier: The Vitrified Basin
"Disaster Area, a plutonium rock band from the Gagrakacka Mind Zones, are generally held to be not only the loudest rock band in the Galaxy, but in fact the loudest noise of any kind at all."
— The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Chapter 21
Situated in what was once the most barren salt sink of Kakrafoon, The Vitrified Basin is the colossal, mirror-like crater basin created by Disaster Area's historic open-air concert.
Physical Characteristics
- Obsidian Flooring: The energy output of Disaster Area's subwoofer arrays was so intense that several billion metric tons of desert quartz were instantly melted and recast into a seamless sheet of dark, shimmering volcanic glass stretching forty square kilometers.
- The Concrete Bunkers: Ringing the perimeter thirty miles away are the reinforced titanium-reinforced observation shelters where concertgoers huddled, clutching their Massively Useful Towels over their ears and wearing Peril Sensitive Sunglasses to shield against the ocular fury of the pyrotechnics.
- Acoustic Residuals: Even decades after the show, localized pockets of low-frequency sub-bass still resonate through the crystalline bedrock, causing loose gravel to vibrate in perfect rhythm to “Boy-Being Meets Girl-Being Beneath a Silvery Moon Which Then Explodes for No Adequately Explored Reason.”
Galactic Pilgrimage
Music historians, acousticians, and grateful Belcerebon pilgrims regularly travel to the basin to stand in silent meditation upon the polished glass floor, commemorating the day the Galaxy's loudest noise brought peaceful silence to Kakrafoon.
Cape Canaveral Space Force Station
The primary rocket launching range and telemetry complex on Earth's Atlantic coast. Famous in galactic history for failing to register a single radar blip as several dozen office-block-sized yellow Vogon Constructor Ships passed directly overhead.
Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station
A sprawling satellite earth station located on Goonhilly Downs in Cornwall, England. Renowned for its enormous steerable parabolic dish antennas, which famously failed to notice the Vogon Constructor Fleet soaring through the ionosphere—even though it was exactly the sort of thing they had been looking for all those years.
