Poghril Tribe

An extinct tribe from the famine-struck land of Poghril in the Pansel system. All members perished from famine except for one last survivor, who died of cholesterol poisoning after 239,000 lightly fried eggs materialized in a large wobbly heap.

Species Dossier: The Poghril Tribe

"Two hundred and thirty-nine thousand lightly fried eggs fell out of it too, materializing in a large wobbly heap on the famine-struck land of Poghril in the Pansel system.
The whole Poghril tribe had died out from famine except for one last man who died of cholesterol poisoning some weeks later."

— The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chapter 9

The Poghril tribe was the indigenous population of the famine-struck land of Poghril in the Pansel system. Their complete extinction stands in galactic history as one of the most poignant collateral ironies of the Heart of Gold's Infinite Improbability Drive.

Extinction in Two Acts

  1. Famine: Prior to the Heart of Gold's maiden improbability transit, the entire Poghril tribe died out from severe famine—with the sole exception of one last surviving man.
  2. Cholesterol Poisoning: When a hole in the Galaxy (a nothingth of a second long, a nothingth of an inch wide, and millions of light-years from end to end) closed up during the rescue of Ford Prefect and Arthur Dent, two hundred and thirty-nine thousand lightly fried eggs fell out of it and materialized in a large wobbly heap on Poghril. Some weeks later, the last man of the Poghril tribe died of cholesterol poisoning.
