Planet Dossier: Poghril

"Two hundred and thirty-nine thousand lightly fried eggs fell out of it too, materializing in a large wobbly heap on the famine-struck land of Poghril in the Pansel system.
The whole Poghril tribe had died out from famine except for one last man who died of cholesterol poisoning some weeks later."

— The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chapter 9

Poghril is a famine-struck land in the Pansel system, and the ancestral home of the extinct Poghril tribe.

The Famine & The 239,000 Lightly Fried Eggs

For generations, the land of Poghril suffered from catastrophic ecological blight and starvation that gradually wiped out the indigenous Poghril tribe until only a single living tribesman remained.

When the Heart of Gold's Infinite Improbability Drive tore a microscopic hole across millions of light-years of the Galaxy while rescuing Ford Prefect and Arthur Dent:

  • The Improbable Delivery: Alongside paper hats, party balloons, and seven three-foot-high market analysts who fell into deep space, two hundred and thirty-nine thousand lightly fried eggs fell out of the closing rupture and materialized in a large wobbly heap directly on the famine-struck land of Poghril.
  • The Final Irony: Having survived the famine that killed the rest of his people, the last man of the Poghril tribe died of cholesterol poisoning some weeks later.
