Kakrafoon
A harsh, arid world of blistering red deserts and thirty-mile-high dust storms. Famous for its telepathic Belcerebon natives, and as the historic staging ground for Disaster Area's cataclysmic, world-altering plutonium rock concert.
Planet Dossier: Kakrafoon
"A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have... you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon..."
— The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chapter 3
"The planet of Kakrafoon is a world with thirty-mile-high red dust storms, vast deserts, and dried-up oceans.
The Belcerebons of Kakrafoon used to be one of the most enlightened, peaceful and thoughtful races in the Galaxy, and were thus very happy. However, as is the way with the universe, this couldn't last."
— The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Chapter 21
Kakrafoon (frequently designated as Kakrafoon Kappa in older imperial star charts) is an arid, sun-scorched terrestrial world located within the outer perimeter of the Gagrakacka Mind Zones. Dominated by howling crimson gale winds, towering hematite dust devils, and vast salt basins where primordial seas vanished eons ago, it is one of the most starkly dramatic planetary landscapes in the known Galaxy.
Planetary Biosphere & Environmental Conditions
Prior to its dramatic terraforming event, Kakrafoon was classified as an inhospitable Grade-IV arid wasteland:
- The Crimson Dust Storms: Towering squall fronts rising up to thirty miles into the stratosphere sweep continuously across the equatorial dunes, carrying sharp silicon particulates that can strip paint from a standard scout hull in under four minutes.
- Survival Protocols: Field hitchhikers exploring Kakrafoon's desert interior are emphatically reminded that a Massively Useful Towel must be soaked and wrapped securely across the nasal membranes to avoid respiratory hematite poisoning.
- Peril Mitigation: Sturdy light-polarizing eyewear such as Joo Janta 200 Super-Chromatic Peril Sensitive Sunglasses is recommended when navigating the reflective, vitrified sand plains.
The Tragedy and Comedy of the Belcerebons
For millennia, the indigenous sentient inhabitants of Kakrafoon—the gentle, high-domed Belcerebons—enjoyed an enviable reputation as one of the most peaceful, erudite, and contemplative civilizations in the cosmos.
Tragically, this idyllic existence came to an abrupt halt due to an imperial judicial curse (or evolutionary accident, depending on which edition of the Guide you consult) that granted the entire population uncontrollable broadcast telepathy.
Unable to block out the unfiltered mental chatter of billions of fellow citizens, every Belcerebon was forced to engage in continuous, non-stop, loud vocal chatter about the most trivial matters imaginable—the weather, minor digestive ailments, the squeakiness of cheap sandals—purely to drown out the unbearable cacophony inside their own skulls.
The Disaster Area Concert
Kakrafoon entered galactic legend when it was chosen by Disaster Area, the celebrated plutonium rock band from the Gagrakacka Mind Zones, as the concert venue for their monumental open-air tour:
- The Loudest Sound in Existence: Disaster Area's stage setup was assembled directly on the scorched plains of The Vitrified Basin. Because their sound systems generate acoustic energy equivalent to small thermonuclear warheads, the human and alien audience was safely quarantined inside heavily shielded concrete bunkers thirty miles away, while the band conducted the performance remotely from an orbiting command dreadnought.
- Planetary Climax: During the finale of their signature anthem, an unmanned stunt ship was piloted directly into Kakrafoon's primary star. The resulting stellar flare, colliding with the multi-gigawatt sonic shockwaves rattling across the troposphere, triggered catastrophic atmospheric inversion.
- The Miracle of Silence: The sheer acoustic and electromagnetic upheaval vaporized the lingering telepathic field across the entire hemisphere, instantly snapping the feedback loop and restoring the Belcerebons to profound, blessed, and tearful tranquility. Furthermore, torrential rains fell upon Kakrafoon for the first time in ten thousand years, transforming vast swaths of dead desert into vibrant green savannah.
Jaglan Beta
A world in the Western Spiral Arm famed in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for its cold moons—across which hitchhikers bound while wrapping a towel around themselves for warmth—as well as the Great Fornicate and the Lesser Fornicate.
Kria
Homeworld of the Azgoths of Kria and birthplace of the second worst poetry in the Universe, where Poet Master Grunthos the Flatulent recited his lethal verse.
