Indestructible Ball of String

"For some reason, if a strag discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray..."

— The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chapter 3

The Indestructible Ball of String is a four-hundred-meter continuous spool of triple-ply braided aramid twine wound tightly into a fist-sized ball. While seemingly mundane in an era of anti-gravity repulsors and matter replicators, string remains one of the few low-tech inventions that simply cannot be improved upon.

Versatile Field Applications

Hitchhikers throughout the known cosmos find endless practical uses for a good ball of string:

  • Cargo Lashing: Tying overloaded rucksacks and extra blankets to the exterior handrails of cargo shuttles before entering hyperspace.
  • Towel Tethering: Tying one corner of your Massively Useful Towel to your belt loop so it cannot blow away in the thirty-mile-high dust storms of Kakrafoon.
  • Spacewalk Lifeline: Tying one end to the handle of an airlock before stepping out into vacuum, just in case the ship's automatic tether mechanism decides to experience an existential crisis.
  • Strag Adoration: Like the Toothbrush, producing a tidy ball of string from your pocket confirms to all watching strags that you are a delightfully resourceful person who has life thoroughly sorted out.
